Connecting neighbors and promoting a healthy community

Developing a safe community trail system

Speedway Trails Association is an all-volunteer group, established in 2007 with a goal of developing a safe community trail system in the Town of Speedway, accessible for all - strollers to wheel chairs. The purpose of these trails is to connect neighbors, promote local businesses, improve the environment and provide for a healthy community.

Interesting in the Indianapolis 500? We have parking near Turn 1.

A Brief History

The trails in Speedway have required incredible vision, planning, and hard work not only to create but also to maintain. This started with a dream to better connect the citizens of Speedway and has blossomed into a passion to connect the whole west side of Indianapolis. Before looking ahead at what’s next, it can be helpful to look back on what has been.

Expanding the trail

This project has extended the existing B&O Trail from the town of Speedway to Michigan Street, adding 2.6 miles of new asphalt trail. The city of Indianapolis is currently constructing a dedicated bike path along Michigan Street to connect the trail to the White River. The next phase of construction is focused westward, looking to link the trail in Speedway to the existing B&O Trail of Hendricks County. One major piece of this vision has already been completed with the construction of the bridge over Eagle Creek. Various organizations help to fund this endeavor but a main contributor is a government sponsored program: Next Level Trails. Other key partners in this endeavor include the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), Town of Speedway, Indy Parks Foundation, Allison Transmission, Wilson Environmental, and Eskenazi Health.

Other Trails Around the Community

Speedway Trails Association is a part of a broader community working to bring safe and convenient pedestrian passageways to the greater Indianapolis area. B&O Trails Association (BOTA) cares for the portion of the B&O Trail in Hendricks County. Our trail will also link to the trail system downtown. Intersecting our trail here in Speedway will one day be the Eagle Creek Greenway. Click below to learn more about other areas receiving funds for trail expansion!
